In the grinding and processing of seed spices (such as cumin seeds, pepper seeds and coriander seeds), the BSZ pin mill has a more targeted advantage over the hammer mill. The core reason is that its grinding principle and structural design are highly compatible with the material characteristics of seed spices—achieving both efficient grinding and maximum preservation of the flavor and active ingredients of the spices, while avoiding problems such as clogging and overheating.
Common characteristics of seed spices are:
Physical properties: medium hardness (Mohs hardness 2-4), uniform particle size (2-5mm), contains oil/volatile oil (e.g., pepper contains 5%-10% oil), and is highly brittle (easily broken in dry conditions; avoid toughness and sticking).
Core requirements:
① Uniform particle size (typically 40-120 mesh, suitable for seasonings and food processing);
② Retain volatile oils (flavor cores, such as cuminol and piperine), avoiding high-temperature volatilization;
③ Avoid material blockage/sticking (oil easily causes material sticking);
④ Low loss and high yield (suitable for industrial production).
The core working principle of the BSZ pin mill: A high-speed rotating pin disc creates shearing, impact, and grinding zones. After entering the chamber, the material is impacted and sheared by the high-speed rotating pins, and simultaneously impacted by centrifugal force against the inner wall of the chamber, ultimately being pulverized to the target particle size.
Its structure and principle are perfectly suited to the characteristics of seed-based spices, with the following specific advantages:
1. High-efficiency pulverization: Specifically addresses the need for "hard seed shells + uniform crushing"
Dual action of shearing and impact: Seed-based spices often have hard outer shells (such as pepper seeds and cumin seeds). Simple impact pulverizers (such as hammer mills) easily lead to material bouncing and insufficient pulverization. The pin mill's "pin array" acts like "scissors" to shear the seed shells, while simultaneously impacting and crushing the internal kernels at high speed, resulting in higher pulverization efficiency than hammer mills.
2. Anti-clogging + Suitable for slightly oily/sticky materials. The absence of a screen prevents clogging caused by oil precipitation and clumping after seed grinding, allowing for continuous and stable production (especially for high-oil seeds such as Sichuan pepper and black pepper), eliminating the need for frequent shutdowns to clean the screen. (For grinding high-oil spices such as nutmeg, liquid nitrogen is required.)
3. Adjustable particle size + meets multiple needs. The BSZ pin mill eliminates the need to change screens, allowing for quick switching between different particle size requirements (e.g., coarse crushing for seasonings, fine crushing for spice powders and raw material extraction).
Therefore, for the large-scale, high-quality grinding of seed spices, the BSZ pin mill is the most cost-effective and adaptable option, especially suitable for food/condiment production enterprises and processing scenarios.
In the video, it is our BSZ-350 Contraplex pin mill, we are using it to grind black pepper into powder. This mill is designed to grind oily spices, like mustard seeds,cumin, coriander seeds...etc This mill can also be connected with liquid nitrogen.
